Bobbin Winding - an Alternative Way

Winding a Tapestry Bobbin

1. Holding the bobbin in your right hand lay yarn over the spindle with the yarn away from you.

2. Wind the yarn onto the bobbin for a few turns then hitch on.

3. Tensioning the yarns with your left hand turn the bobbin with your right hand away from you. Fill the bobbin evenly.

4. Turning the bobbin keeps multiple strands from twisting. Finish with a half hitch.

2011 Ymmyarns Prices Remain the Same as 2010

NOTE that the 2011 price of ymmyarns wools & silks will stay the same as 2010. Our usual range of 20, 50 and 100g balls tapestry wool and 30 g silk skeins will be available.

Our yarns can be used singly for finer setts or in multiples for wider setts or blended for multiple colours.

We will also continue to supply wool and silk in cut hanks of 10 x 75cm lengths (approx 30in).

These hanks can be used in small areas or sampling or small tapestries. They can be sent at letter rate which reduces postage costs.

Linda Whitefeather Receives Ymmyarns 2009 Award

At the 2009 Graduation Ceremony Linda Whitefeather received the Ymmyarns inaugural Award for the Top Performing student of the 2009 1st year subjects of the Diploma of Tapestry, SWTAFE, Warrambol, Victoria. Linda has a previous background in ceramic sculpture and drawing commenced the Diploma course in 2009. The tapestry pictured She says her design for the tapestry pictured emerged after she abandoned an overworked design exploring pinks and turquoise greens. The pink branching form first appeared, then the large leaves which became companion forms that take up guardians or shields positions. She used knotting techniques to provide more texture. The landscape of rocks and clouds kept the original intent of working with pinks and greens. Linda's award includes tapestry wool and silk yarns.

'Shadow Me' by Yvonne Eade

'Shadow Me' is my tapestry for the AuNZTapestryProject 2010 'Is This Me?'. This is an annual project which invites tapestry weavers from Australia and New Zealand to participate. The project is open to all and unjuried. The 2010 topic was a self portrait and the size was limited to a maximum size of 20 x 20cm. The resulting 38 tapestries will be exhibited during June, July and August, 2010, in WA, SA, SWTAFE Warrnambool, Vic, and Dept Textiles, ANU, Canberra. Previous venues were the Creative Fibre Festival, NZ and Dence Park, Epping, NSW, Aust.

My tapestry is based on a photo I took of myself as a shadow. The photo's background was spiky tree leaves and cones so this became the surface texture with supplementary weft of soumak and half hitches. To make it more of a portrait I added the eyes and lips to the background. The size is 15 x 20cm and the weft is ymmyarns wool & silk on a warp of seine cotton.

"This tapestry is a value study of the fleshy ribs of a saguaro cactus, woven as part of my work for a distance mentoring program created by renowned tapestry artist, Silvia Heyden. In this program Heyden provides challenges in sketching, design, & weaving problems based on Bauhaus principles which are individually interpreted by participants, with guidance sought from Heyden as necessary. The program has three parts, with three months allowed for completion of each". Lyn Hart
